Part 2:  The City Walls and the Commonwealth of Believers

Critical to the success of the believers creating a City Church to impact the world around them is the need for restricted access and qualified entrance. Those who belong together must come together for the work of the Kingdom. Here is why and how....

In my last blog I introduced you to the idea that the Lord has gifted us with a plethora of new technologies that are wonderful aids to help us build community among the believers. We do need to be all in one building physically in order to meaningfully fellowship and interact with each other.

I suggested that we can create virtual communities that allow us in both a city wide area as well as nationally to create meaningful and creative relationships. But critical to the success of this new community of believers is the idea of restricted access. It is restricted access that allows us to create the vitally important concept of the "Commonwealth of Believers".

Let me explain from both scripture and history. First history....

As the Reformation message spread after 1517 the essence of the Reformation was to affect two critical power structures that held the masses in captivity...the power of the feudal monarchy and the power of the Papal Church.

Breaking the power of the Catholic Pope was the easiest part....many nations were tired of Rome's interference in their politics and the draining of financial resources as well as at some point about half the land of Europe was under the ownership of the Catholic church...and they did not pay taxes.

So the states of England, German states, Holland, Scandinavian states, Swiss cantons...they all declared themselves free from Papal authority.  But they resisted the attack on the total authority of the kings and princes. Until Oliver Cromwell and his Protestant New Model Army enforced the concept of sovereignty of the rule of law through Parliament...and the king lost his head in the struggle accused of treason.

Cromwell then proclaimed that England was now a "Commonwealth". To be ruled by God's law for the prosperity of all the people.  It did not work.  In the meantime the Puritan faction in both England and Europe realised that if you want a true "Commonwealth" of people who live for God and ruled by the laws of God you have to start over in a new land without all the corrupting influence of sinners who only live for themselves.

And so we have the famous first Puritan settlers setting off for the new wilderness in the west called America. The little ship Mayflower blew off course from her intended destination of Virginia where the settlers had a charter for settlement but landed further north in uncharted territory we now call Massachusetts. Realizing they are landing in "no-mans land" under no authority or ownership of the king they formed the famous "Mayflower Compact" a new oath to God and each other that they are about to form a new nation in a new land and called it the "Commonwealth of Massachusetts."
Now here is the fascinating thing about the original constitutions of the first early settlements of America that became states.  They were all dedicated to the establishment of the Kingdom of God on earth and all required public officials to be Protestants and swear faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Old Testament and New Testament as scripture. Here some examples from the original constitutions of some of the states:

Articles of Confederation of the United Colonies of New England 1643
"Whereas we all came into these parts of America with one and the same end and aim namely to advance the Kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ and to enjoy the liberties of the Gospel in purity and peace..."

Constitution of Delaware 1776 Art. 22 Oath of office " profess faith in God the Father and His only Son Jesus Christ....I do acknowledge the Holy scripture of the Old and New Testament to be given by divine inspiration."

Constitution of Georgia 1777 Art VI "The representatives shall be....of the Protestant religion and of the age of 21 years..."

Constitution of Maryland 1776 Art LV oath of office "I do not hold my self bound in allegiance to the King of England ...and shall also subscribe a declaration of his belief in the Christian religion."

Constitution of New Jersey 1683 Art XVI "No man shall be admitted a member of the great or common Council or any other place of public trust who shall not profess in Christ Jesus..."

Charter of Delaware 1701 "And all persons who also profess to believe in Jesus Christ the saviour of the world shall be capable to serve this government in any capacity..."

Charter of Massachusetts 1691 "there shall be liberty of Conscience allowed in the worship of God to all Christians, except Papists, inhabiting or which shall inhabit our said province or territory."

Constitution of North Carolina 1776 Art.XXXII "That no person who shall deny the being of God or the truth of the Protestant religion or the divine authority of either the Old or New Testaments...shall be capable of holding office..."

When you hear about American talking about the "founders" of the country they talk about people like Washington, Madison, Franklin, Jefferson...the leaders of the Masonic coup of 1789 that imposed a new vision and new constitution on America that wiped out the real "founders" of America and the foundation they laid as the land where Jesus Christ is Lord and the Kingdom of God was to be built on God's law.

The walls of the city of God had been breached and all manner of ungodliness flooded in.

Which brings us to the vision of the City of God in Revelation 21 and 22. Please note that this is not a vision of heaven. You will see that there are all sorts of ungodly people here. But pleaser note the following.

God wishes to heal the nations through His City, the New Jerusalem. The New Jerusalem is not a physical city coming out of heaven. It is the Church of Jesus Christ.

This city has walls and many gates each guarded by an angel to restrict entrance. The same angel that stood in the way in the garden of Eden that nobody may eat of the Tree of Life without permission. (Rev. 21;12)

Everyone is scrutinized before entry is permitted. Are their names recorded in the Book of Life? (Rev. 20:12,15) If not they are excluded and end up in severe punishment.

Only those who washed their robes in the blood of Jesus Christ are allowed entrance. (Rev. 22;14) Outside are those who wish to live by their own rules.

"Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood". (Rev. 22:15)

Can you see here a picture of what our nation has become? Can you see what our cities have degenerated into? And not just here, the same is happening all over the world.

But now please understand this very important fact:

God is not allowing us to escape from the problems of this world. God so loved the world that He not only sent His Son into the world but He sent us also into the world to save the world.

Now the second important concept that this whole series is about:

We cannot heal the world unless we the people of God have come together in such as a way as to be the City of God, walls of protection around God's people. We cannot help the world unless we are prospering. We cannot help the world unless we are healed.

Everywhere around me I see Christians struggling just like anyone and everyone in the world with broken marriages, rebellious children, struggling know the story. You see it around you.  And yet I know somewhere in the broad body of Christ there are gifts and abilities and anointings and answers.  We just need to find one another.

Creating the Commonwealth of the Church

The vision of Rev. 21-22 in scripture is the pattern that the Lord wants us to establish here on earth. If we are to heal the nations we need to create the City of God on earth. We need to bring the people of God together that allows us to build up our families, build up our finances, build up our spiritual gifts, build us up into the full stature of maturity that the Lord wants us to move into.

That means we have to start using the gifts of technology that will hep us to create that community.  We do not need physical ground. We do not need our own state or province. But we do need a space that is our own where we can bring our gifts and abilities.

Look at those scriptures deeper. It says the "kings of the earth bring their glory into the city". God is wanting to make us priests and kings. That means we are conquerors and we operate in the world and then we bring in our gifts and abundance into the Commonwealth of the Believers...the storehouse of God for sharing with others in the fellowship who are in need.

Strategic Dead Ends

The strategy that normal churches follow is not working.  We hear a sermon on Sunday and then Monday we are sent into the world. But we are sent alone. And we are sent into a crumbling world order in which the social and economic and political order is crumbling.  Try preaching "prosperity through tithing" in Zimbabwe or Nigeria where the whole national infrastructures are gone....and yet massive crowds of mega-churches by the millions. The vibrant factories of Bulawayo are now empty shells but filled on Sundays. Religions is big business. But any prosperity?

The time for talking as means of changing the world is over.

We Christians need to build the Commonwealth of believers and restrict access to that Commonwealth to those only committed to the Kingdom of God.  We have the technology to do it.

We can do our own farming, food production, local energy independence, manufacturing on local scale, schooling, university, technicons, own banking and finance, own trading, own currency, own entertainment, own culture, own legal system.  And we can do all this without breaking any laws all within the laws of our country and without racial bias because the only discrimination will be....are you a reborn child of God and will you commit yourself to following the rules of the community of God's people.

You've heard here in South Africa much talk about BEE (Black Economic Empowerment)....well it is time we talk about Kingdom Empowerment as in seek ye first the Kingdom of God....and then seek first to empower our Kingdom people.

We need to uncouple from the world agenda and the stupidity of sinners and their foolishness before they drag us down the drain with them.

We can only help a drowning world if we have constructed the lifeboats. Otherwise we go down with them.

Next week I want to get into some of the nitty-gritty of how we can set up our believers Commonwealth.
