Well, here it is, 22nd December 2012 and no Apocalypse! That so many evangelical Christians got caught up with another "end times" date setting fiasco is testimony to the lack of proper teaching in our churches.  We have unfortunately created an expectation of the "end of the world" within our evangelical community and thereby encouraged people and ministries to always be looking for sign that the end is upon us.

So let me take this opportunity to give you the scriptures for some truly astounding concepts in the Bible, namely:
- the world is never going to end
- God has plans that stretch for thousands of generations
- the growth of God's Kingdom will never end
- it is part of the Lord's great plan and purpose for this wonderful creation of His that all the billions of galaxies be settled, occupied and made productive by His children.

As evangelicals who believe the word of God we unfortunately do not consider the whole counsel of God because too many preachers like to do selective preaching on those scriptures that suit their preferences.  And unfortunately those preferences over the last number of decades have been to try to convince everyone that the end is upon us. We are the "terminal generation" because this is the fateful generation that saw the indisputable sign of the end times: the return of the Jews to Israel. But as I show in my book that prophecy of Ezekiel was fulfilled in 141 BC when Israel once again became an independent nation and in 101 BC once again had its monarch restored.

The Jehovah's Witnesses fell into this prophetic trap when they predicted that the generation that saw the "Great War" of 1914-1918 was the last generation but as the decades passed they desperately tried to extend the timeline by pointing out that there were still survivors of the Great War generation alive. Today they have given up on that failed prophecy. And so will it also be with the generation that saw the return of the Jews in 1948....the years will turn to decades and there will be no "end times" and no Rapture because they do not preach the Kingdom has come and they do not understand the great purposes of God with humanity and His universe. They have these nice charts with a 7000 year time line from Adam to the end and with still a 1000 year Millennium still ahead we are now supposedly at the end of human government and God is ready to destroy the earth.

But what does scripture really say? Lets look and see.

Scripture says that the world had a beginning but it has no end..
"...from the beginning of the world...throughout all ages, world without end. Amen." (Eph. 3:9,21)  Folks wrap your mind around this scripture, the world is never going to end!

Now try this idea...God promised that He would never again destroy mankind on the earth and on top of that promised to never again curse the ground.

"Never again will I curse the ground because of man even though every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures as I have done. As long as the earth endures seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease." (Gen. 8:21-22)

So how long will the earth endure? "Generations come and generations go, but the earth endures forever" (Eccl. 1:4).  But that must mean that there will be thousands of generations still ahead? Yes that is right because that is exactly what Exodus 20:6 and Exodus 34:7 says...the Lord punishes the wicked to the third and fourth generation but for the righteous He is merciful for thousands of generations! Moses further declared in Dt. 7:9..."He is the faithful God keeping His covenant of love to a thousand generations of those that love Him and keep His commandments."

The psalmist also confirms this by saying that the earth is established forever (Ps. 78:69) and that the earth and its foundations will never be removed (Ps. 104:5; Ps. 93:1; Ps. 96:10) In Psalm 119:90 he says, "Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth and it endures forever."

So here is what scripture tell us: The earth is not cursed, in fact it is blessed by the Lord and will fulfil exactly the purpose for which He created it.  The earth will never end because God has eternal purposes for this wonderful creation of His. But let us keep in mind when we speak of "the earth" we are really also talking about the vast planetary and galactic systems of the universe which brings us to the next great thought found in Isaiah 45:18.

Now here scripture introduces us to a staggering thought that is going to be very hard for "end of the world" believers to grasp and actually believe, it is this:

"For thus saith the Lord that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he has established it (forever); he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited; I am the Lord there is none else."  (Isaiah 45:18)  Do you see what the Lord is saying here? He says He created the earth and the heavens for them to be inhabited! Before the modern era of satellites and  telescopes we did not know that the heavens were endless, or that they had billions of galaxies or that those galaxies had billions of stars and planets...but we do know that now! And that is why these scriptures are important for our understanding. Now we know that if the earth endures forever, and if the Lord has plans for thousands of generations, then we can understand why we need vast endless heavens to grow into!

Billions of stars in a galaxy....                        Billions of galaxies in the universe...
But even before we get to other star systems we are asked by the Lord to consider the heavens around our solar system and what we find here close to us are staggering resources!  I have a wonderful book by planetary scientist John Lewis called "Mining the Sky" which makes incredible claims about the abundance of material wealth in our local solar system.  We have enough metals, minerals and chemicals on our planets and moons and asteroid belt to support populations of a million times the earth population in space colonies and enough energy to keep them going for millions of years.

But that is just our local sun and its nine planets and asteroids. There are a further 100 billion more such systems in our local galaxy the Milky Way. But that is not all. At last count from the Hubble telescope they are at 15,000 million galaxies and still counting. But that is not all.  Recently they discovered that the galaxies are not going to contract into one ball as the Big Bang theory hopes...they are expanding endlessly. But that is not all.  There is now evidence that our universe is but one of an endless number of parallel universes in an endless "multiverse".

Can you now realize that when Daniel says that the Kingdom grows to fill the "earth" and he also says the Kingdom has no end, it means that God intends for endless growth of His Kingdom through endless galaxies and endless universes. That is why we can look forward to thousands of generations of time still ahead and an endless earth and heavens.  Our puny minds are only starting to grasp the staggering greatness of the Lord and His creation and His wonderful plans for that creation.

So think of it this way...the created universe is the womb of God.  Like a baby in a mother's womb needs time to form a body that will be needed to inhabit and interact with the world after it is born...so we are now in the womb of God being formed to be made fit for the reality of the spirit world of His throne room.  Our birth out of this womb into the glorious light of eternity and His presence we call death...but it is really just a transition to eternal life.  Yes we kick and scream and fight to remain in the womb, but the Lord wants all of us home with Him when He has us ready. Those of us left behind cry and weep for the departed, but heaven rejoices with the entry of each of the Lord's kids. Understand this...God is a Father! He loves kids...he wants plenty of children! How many He wants to birth we are only now beginning in a small way to grasp by seeing the size and capacity of His womb.

So for us still here on earth in these years ahead here is some sound advice...
In the words of Yogi Berra, "It aint over till its over".  And believe the Word of God, "it aint never going to be over!".  So stop worrying about the end of the world because it is never going to be over. Do what the Lord placed you here to do. Bring kids into His world, raise them for the Lord in His image, make families, subdue the earth to support more kids and families, bring heaven to earth and enjoy the wonderful creation of our endlessly creative heavenly Father.
